Out of my Control
Just a little while ago I wrote a blog about the many lessons I’ve learned from diabetes. I stated that I was going to try and write a blog post for every one. So here is a blog post on this subject: “While low I feel that if I ask for help I failed”.
It’s weird how my thoughts are so solid when I am low. I don’t mean that I am more focused on the task at had, because that is the first to go when...

About Last Night
Last night MTV aired it’s premiere of “True Life: I have Diabetes”. I have seen quite a few “True Life” episodes in the past, and I was more than excited to see this one. But actually I forgot it was on until I saw someone on Twitter mention it. Then of course I flipped the TV on and opened up Twitter to see the DOC was all over this!
Overall I was pretty...

List of Lessons
I love to learn. Which is why I love school. Truly I don’t know what I’ll do when I graduate. I love to seek out and learn new things constantly.
But school is not the only place I learn. I learn at home, I learn online, I learn from movies, books, TV, and people I talk to. But there is one thing in my life that I have learned from more than any of those listed above.
Diabetes....

How Time Flys
I really can’t believe that December is already upon us! National Diabetes Month, World Diabetes Day, and all Diabetes Awareness activities were absolutely wonderful this last month.
Along with all of this amazing things happening in the “Diabetes World” I have been immensely busy with school and life in general. I have been neglecting my blog and art but of course not my...

BIG BLUE TEST RECAP
Last week I promised a recap of my big blue test festivities with the whole humaBLOG family! On Monday my mother, my sister and I all participated in the Big Blue Test! So here is the recap!
We all ate dinner before the festivities took place so yes we did expect some higher blood sugars to occur. But that is the point of the Big Blue Test, to get blood sugars in control using insulin and...

WORLD DIABETES DAY!
Happy World Diabetes Day!
In celebration for this day many of my DOC (Diabetes Online Community) friends and I are participating in the Big Blue Test! The Big Blue Test is an event celebrating World Diabetes day by testing, exercising, and then testing again. By far the coolest thing about that is that every test that is taken helps a diabetic get the supplies that they need to survive.

How do you Advocate?
Inquiring minds would like to know! (yeah it’s just mine again!)
What sort of ways to you work to advocate for what you believe? Whether it be diabetes, cancer, healthcare, politically, animal cruelty, whatever you believe in. I think it is very important to advocate for something you believe strongly in. Your voice does help! So get out there and let people know how you feel!
I am very...

Siblings & Diabetes
Sometimes it’s cool having a sister with diabetes. I know I always have at least one person who knows what a low feels like anyway. Actually pretty recently my little sister and I both had a low at the same time.
One late night last week I had just finished some homework and was sitting on the couch with my little sister watching some TV. When we both had a jolt of energy and began...

Hiding my Diabetes Update
So it’s time for me to check in and tell about my journey in my own goals related to diabetes. I’ve made a promise to myself that I will no longer be hiding my diabetes, in fact I will be advocating more than ever.
I promised myself a little while ago that I would not be hiding my diabetes from others any more. But that doesn’t mean that its going to be the first thing I want...

Getting Back on Track
I had my semi-annual visit to the Endocrinologist last week and the following are my results:
My A1c has dropped from 8.6 to 7.5! “Wow, you’ve definitely improved” that’s what the nurse, my parents, and friends have told me. I believe them, I’ve worked so hard to get to this point. I feel like my life has really hit a high note for sure.
If someone would have told...

My Low Box Rocks
It’s three a.m. I’ve been up for hours coughing, sniffling, and staring at my wall as I try and talk myself into sleeping. Eventually I give up on sleeping for the night and turn on a movie instead, and calculate how many more hours I have until I need to get up for school.
My legs were feeling weird but inner Rachel told me it was probably the cough medicine I’m taking plus the...

My Hectic Week
Well last week was definitely been a crazy one. I guess we’ll start at the beginning. Well two weeks ago my little sister had an upper respiratory infection. So of course last week I got my lovely little sisters germs. So this last week I have been so sick. One thing that really sucks about being sick now that I am in college is that sometimes I have to go to school even if I feel so...

No D Day (With a side of D)
So today is no D Day, meaning this blog will not say the word diabetes. (Other than just then when I said Diabetes, oh and there too) I have been thinking on what I would write on as a blog NOT about diabetes (ah I said it again). After much consideration I’ve decided to write about my Dog, Daisy (who’s nickname is D, see what I did there?)
Daisy is my best friend. I do almost...

Bikes, Basal Rates, and Blood Sugars
As you may have read in a previous blog post, I was having some trouble with some sneaky lows while I was exercising. (Mostly when I rode my bike) I decided to make a couple Vlog style videos last week documenting my new approach to exercise.
I honestly never used Temporary Basal rates before just a few months ago. After much work with them while I was sick, I decided to try one out when I was...

The Sneaky Low
Last week I had a “fun” low experience while at school. You know what that means! STORYTIME!
I woke up last Thursday feeling pretty good. Blood glucose was at 99 mg/dl and feeling pretty steady. I went ahead and ate some breakfast and took my normal bolus. When I was just about to head out the door I realized that I had forgotten to change my site the night before (oops!) I...

The One About Fundraising
Wow you all really like you’re sweetener! Thanks for all of your responses and stay tuned, next week I will be doing a post about sweetener! Now on to this post:
Happy Friday! I hope you all have enjoyed you’re weeks as much as I’ve enjoyed mine. By far the most exciting part of my week this week was when I reached my fundraising goal.
I’ve been collection donations for...

A Sweet Little Question
Inquiring minds would like to know (mostly mine)
Just a short question for today’s post.
Do you use sweetener?
If so what kind, and what do you add it to?
If not why not?
Have you heard of a new type of sweetener?
I’ve personally always been a Sweet ‘N Low gal, but when Splenda came out I jumped ship.
How about you? Just leave a comment below or @ reply me on twitter and...

It's Storytime!
Once upon a time there was a little pump site. He was manufactured by a company called Medtronic. He was packaged and sent with his brothers and sisters to a lucky college student in Illinois. Yesterday she opened his temporary plastic house and attached him to her leg. He was real happy pumping insulin to the girl whose pancreas has been thirteen years retired. Then that night while the girl was...

The Battles of Blood Sugar
I love sharing stories of my life when Diabetes doesn’t stop me from doing what I want to do. But sometimes that isn’t the case. The last few days I feel like I have been at war with my body to do what I want to do. Here’s the story:
So I have been really getting into riding my bike, for these reasons.
I love riding my bike!
I got a new bike this summer and I haven’t...

The One About Hiding My Diabetes
I am proud to be diabetic. I truly believe that diabetes has made me who I am today. But there are sometimes when I just want to be “normal”. I hate to say it but sometimes I hide my diabetes.
I wear a very visible pink insulin pump on my pocket every day. I wear a medical alert bracelet, and drive my car with my “Diabetic Driver” sticker, and JDRF magnet. Yet I manage...

Fight the Urge to SWAG.
Yeah you read that right. It’s SWAG, not SWAK, which of course stands for sealed w/ a kiss. SWAG in the Diabetes Community stands for Scientific Wild Ass Guess. What it refers to is instead of meticulously counting carbs or for times when counting carbs cannot be done a carb guess occurs.
I am not innocent of the crime of the carb guessing game. “Ah this banana is about 15 grams of...

Reunited
Recently I was going through some old boxes in my closet and I found my old insulin pump! I was so elated and happy; it was like I was reunited with a long lost friend. So to keep with the theme of Insulin Pump Therapy here is a blog about my first experiences with an Insulin Pump.
I screamed when I found it in an old box of insulin supplies. I found my little friend that hung on my hip for five...

Log Books Have Feelings Too
About a month ago I created a digital log book to help me change my insulin doses. I haven’t used a log book in years, and when I did use one I didn’t really use it to it’s full potential.
I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to actually keep a physical log book. I begin by writing everything down and keeping track of all of my numbers, and then eventually I just...

Playing D Game
As you might remember, a couple of weeks ago I had a procedure to check out a spot on my lung. After the procedure I was given a drug by the name of Prednisone to help with the inflammation in my lungs.
One side effect that Prednisone has is that it elevates blood sugar levels. At first I was worried that it messed with my insulin resistance, however after a short Dr. Google session I learned...

“Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” David Ogden Stiers
My family has been recently hit with a very sad and unfortunate event. My Great Grandma was faced with a massive heart attack this last evening. At first we had high hopes for her recovery (because she is one tough lady), but at this moment things are not looking good. She is 86 years young and has been...

Educating and Awareness (Even if You Don't Want...
Every once and a while I get that one person who just doesn’t understand diabetes. Before now I would just nod my head and stay silent, all the while inner Rachel is boiling with anger and the need to educate.
About six months ago I was at a Christmas party and I wore a fleece jacket that said “Stop Diabetes” with the ADA logo in the corner. A gentleman came up to me and said;...

Diabetes, College and Me
The other day I read a blog post with 10 tips for College Students with Diabetes by the lovely people over at Lauren’s Hope. So inner Rachel said; “Hey, Diabetes tags along with you everyday to college! Why don’t you right a bloggity-blog post?” Thanks to inner Rachel, I’ve decided to add one more tip for College Students dragging Diabetes with them to class.
Next week marks the beginning...

Lung Games
Yesterday I had a procedure done on my lungs. The entire week before I was so nervous and it was always on my mind. When it was finally over I felt I needed to write a blog and share my experience. Please enjoy!
The Back Story:
About six months ago I came down with a bout of pneumonia. Which isn’t really uncommon for me because I have asthma and I usually catch some sort of pneumonia every...

My Dark days of D
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my childhood and growing up with Diabetes. Specifically I’ve been thinking about the control of my diabetes. Although I have good control of my diabetes now it hasn’t always been that way. These are my “Dark Days of D”. Prepare yourself, it’s a long trip.
I was diagnosed at age eight. So like many parents of young children with D, mine were in control...

A Lifetime of Love
This month marks the eleventh year that my little sister, Em, has had type 1 diabetes. So for the occasion I’ve written a little heart filled letter to her. I invite you all to read and enjoy!
Dear Little Sister,
When you were born I wasn’t sure how I felt about being a big sister. I recall you screaming so loudly and I asked where your “off switch” was. Those first couple years I was...

Freedom with D
First of all I just want to thank Kim V. over at textingmypancreas.com for interviewing me and featuring me on her blog yesterday. That was beyond awesome for me!
I have been thinking more recently of my diabetic childhood for creating humablog videos. One thing I’ve noticed is that it has been making me much more emotional about it all. Not in a bad way of course. It really feels odd to...

Medical Identification
I’ve returned from camp this week! Having returned from Diabetes camp I am really into some new diabetes stuffs. So one of the first things that I did upon returning from my AMAZING camp experience this year (expect a blog about camp soon..promise) is that I purchased a “Diabetic Driver” window cling.
I know it seems random. But I was looking for some cool stuff to keep in my...

Promised a Miracle?
With all the news of the death of Caylee Anthony floating around the news I have had many deep thoughts on how hard of a job parenthood is. Now I am not a parent, and I probably won’t be one for a long while, but I know just by observing friends and family members how difficult it is to keep a living human being alive as they grow.
And some things in life seem to make that harder....

So to start off let’s have a little humaBLOG history lesson shall we? I was diagnose with Type 1...
